Third Annual Book/Yard Sale to Benefit MJ Help Center Mt. Juliet, TN: The Wilson County Democratic Women will hold the third annual book/yard sale to benefit the Mount Juliet Help Center. For the past two years, the community has come together to make this a successful fund raiser for the Help Center raising over $2,000 each year. All funds raised go to the Help Center. “The MJ Help Center has relocated during the past year and needs funds more than ever to defer the expenses of the move and to support the more than 200 families that it helps in the MJ area,” said Mary Bacon, President of the MJ Help Center Board. The Help Center is now located at 3424 North Mt. Juliet Road, adjacent to the Celebration Lutheran Church. They have a new building and are working closely with the local churches to help families in need who live west of Hwy 109. The Book/Yard Sale will be held at the Help Center on October 12th and 13th. The hours on Friday will be from 8 AM to 4 PM and on Saturday from 8 AM to 2 PM. Donations are needed. We accept everything except clothing. “In past years, we have sold a kitchen stove, washer and dryer and a shower stall,” said Charlene Foutch, President of the Wilson County Democratic Women. “We always have a wide selection of books and children’s toys,” added Foutch. If you would like to donate items for the sale, please contact Charlene Foutch at 758-9916 to arrange pick-up. In addition, you can drop off items on the days of the sale. Two $1,000 2007 Scholarships Awarded by Wilson Democrats
Lebanon, TN: The Wilson County Democratic Party recently awarded two $1,000 scholarships to Secoy Reeves a senior graduating from Lebanon High School and Kalli Nix a senior graduating from Donelson Christian Academy. Secoy is the son of Simmone Reeves of Lebanon and Kalli is the daughter of Matt and Barbara Nix of Mount Juliet.
The scholarship awarded was based upon essays that Secoy and Kalli wrote entitled “The History of Organized Labor Unions in Providing Worker Benefits”. They competed against entrants from across the county. Secoy will use his $1,000 scholarship in conjunction with his football scholarship to Carson-Newman College. Kalli will be attending Union University in Jackson, TN and plans to pursue a career in counseling.
This is the fourth year that the Democratic Party has awarded these scholarships to honor the memory of Robert Pruitte who was a native and life-long resident of Wilson County. He was a union leader, community activist and strong supporter of the Democratic Party. He was famous in Democratic Party circles for his creation of many political buttons before his untimely death.
The scholarships were announced at the annual Robert Pruitte Democratic Celebration which raises money each year to fund the scholarships and the activities of the Democratic Party. Secoy Reeves attended with his family, but Kalli Nix was not able to attend. Guest speaker this year was Congressman Lincoln Davis of the 4th Congressional District. Also attending were Representative Stratton Bone, Mike Terry representing Congressman Bart Gordon and Phil Ponder representing Congressman Jim Cooper and representing labor were Jerry Lee President of TN AFL-CIO.

Wilson County Democrats Welcome Ford to Headquarters Opening The Wilson County Democratic Party will officially open their 2006 campaign headquarters on Saturday, August 12. The festivities will begin at 10:30 am. The event will include an old fashioned political rally with speeches, music, hot dogs and soft drinks.
Congressman Harold Ford, Jr., Democratic Candidate for the US Senate will be the featured speaker. Ford will be joined by Democratic Candidate for the TN State Senate 17th District, Bob Rochelle and Stratton Bone, Democrat for Reelection for the TN House in the 46th District. Congressmen Cooper and Gordon are also expected to attend and they are both Democratic candidates for reelection. Paula Flowers will be representing Governor Bredesen for his reelection campaign. Many other newly elected local officials will also be in attendance.
“We are excited to have the opportunity for the people of Wilson County to come and meet our Democratic candidates, pick up campaign materials and see our new headquarters,” said Mary Patterson, Chairperson of the Wilson County Democrats.
Local Lebanon businessman Brent Rader, Chair of the Ford Campaign in Wilson County said, “We have a great candidate for a new generation in Congressman Ford. We are dedicated to getting out the word in Wilson County about the bright future that Congressman Ford wants to bring to Tennessee and the country.”
The headquarters is located on West Main in Lebanon, in the West Main Center, the shopping center next to Sonic. There will be yard signs and bumper stickers available for all the Democratic candidates in this November’s election. Bring a lawn chair and join us Saturday.

Continuing their positive contributions to community, the Wilson County Democratic Party and the Wilson County Democratic Women recently awarded college scholarships to three Wilson County High School students. Both Democratic organizations held essay contests and the scholarship winners were selected based on the content of their essays.
Linda Armistead secretary of Wilson Co. Democratic Women awarded Robin Crowell, a 2006 graduate of Mt. Juliet High School, a $400.00 scholarship at the May meeting. The topic of the essay was “the Importance of Women in the Political Process.” Robin is the daughter of Denise and Glen Crowell of Mt. Juliet. Robin graduated with Honors and will be attending David Lipscomb University this fall as pre-med major .
Two $1,0000 scholarships were awarded in June by the Wilson County Democratic Party at the Robert Pruitte Celebration. The scholarships have been set up in memory of Robert Pruitte, a proud union member and Democratic Party activist. The winners submitted essays about “The Role of Labor Unions in the Democratic Party”.
Russell Freda, a 2006 graduate of Mt. Juliet High, was awarded one of the Robert Pruitte Scholarships. He is the son of Rick and Barbara Freda of Mt. Juliet. Mr. Freda will attend University of Tennessee in the fall and plans to major in Civil Engineering.
Brittany Pickler, a 2006 graduate of Lebanon High School, was also awarded a Robert Pruitte Scholarship. Ms. Pickler is the daughter of Billy Joe and Connie Pickler of Lebanon, TN. Brittany will attend Kentucky Wesleyan College in Owensboro, KY in the fall and plans to major in Sports Medicine.
WC Democratic Women 2nd annual Book and Yard Sale great success!
The Wilson County Democratic Woman continue to make positive contributions to the county with a second successful Book and Yard sale, this year raising $2,100 for the Mt. Juliet Help Center. The Book and Yard Sale was held on the property in front of the Help Center at 11750 Lebanon Road, on Friday June 2nd and Saturday June 3rd.
“The Democratic Women are proud to be able to help people in need in West Wilson County”, said Charlene Foutch, President of Wilson County Democratic Women. Donated books and household items were collected throughout the county and sold at the event. |
Dixie Taylor-Huff of Lebanon donated the tent that was used for the sale. Volunteers from the Wilson County Democratic Women, Wilson County Democrats and the Mt Juliet Help Center staffed the sale.
The most immediate needs of the Mt Juliet Help Center are a new location and financial contributions. According to Maria Donald, manager of the Center, “The Help Center must leave its current location at the beginning of July”. Anyone who has a suitable location is asked to call the Community Help Center at 754-4357.
The Mt Juliet Help Center is a non-profit organization, which supports those in need in Wilson County from the Davidson County line to Highway 109. The center meets the needs by distributing food and clothing to over 200 individuals a month. The help center operates on an annual budget of $25,000 raised strictly from donations from generous citizens, community churches, the City of Mt Juliet, Wilson County, The United Way and MTEMC.
The Wilson County Democratic Women meet the 2nd Tuesday of each month at the Quality Inn in Mt Juliet at 6:30pm. The Democratic Women make many other contributions throughout the Wilson County community by sponsoring a scholarship to a college bound graduate each year, donating baskets of household items to new home owners of Habit for Humanity and donating new books to the Wilson County Library system several times each year. The Democratic Party Raises over $3000 for Katrina Victims in Wilson County!
On Saturday, October 15th, the Wilson County Democratic Party teamed up with Jim and Cheryl Stallings of The Firm Café to raise over $3000 for Hurricane Katrina victims currently sheltered in Wilson County. The monies raised were given to the Lebanon Chamber of Commerce for disbursement to those in need in the county. The Artist/Songwriter Benefit was held at 435 Park Avenue in Lebanon with well-known Middle Tennessee musicians donating their time to this worthy cause.
The evening opened with musician and New Orleanian T.S. Chantz, followed by Tammy Gunn, the hostess for the evening and her guitarist, who is also a native of New Orleans. Dave Gibson and James Talley entertained the crowd with music from their CD’s followed by recording artists Billy Burnette, Pat McLaughlin and Suzahn. Watertown favorites, Dick Tater and the Peelers played a few songs and the evening closed with music by the Apocalyptic Cowboys.
Business sponsors of the benefit include Krooners, Lighthouse Computer Solutions, Allen Stringed Instruments, Hot Springs Spas of Music City, Superior Music, and an anonymous donation on behalf of Prospect Inc.
“It was our pleasure to assist the community and the Democratic Party with this benefit,” said Cheryl Stallings of The Firm Café. “We look forward to hosting the Young Democrats of Wilson County at The Firm Cafe each month beginning in November. Our next musical benefit will be held in February for the Humane Association of Wilson County.”
Chamber of Commerce President, Sue Vanatta, said, “The money couldn’t have come at a better time. We had a family in need of a U-Haul trailer, so they could retrieve their salvageable belongings. We were able to give them the money immediately thanks to this donation. The other funds will be given in equal amounts to each family. So far we have assisted more than 200 people or about 80 families.
“We saw this as a great opportunity to help those in our own community.” Brent Rader, Vice President of the Wilson County Democratic Party stated. “We believe in helping those in need, not just electing Democrats”
The Lebanon Chamber of Commerce is still accepting monetary donations for hurricane victims. Cash donations are always needed. You can send a check or stop by the office of the Chamber on the Square. Checks should be made out to the Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund and mailed to the Lebanon Chamber Commerce at: 149 Public Square, Lebanon, TN 37087. The Lebanon Help center is also accepting canned goods, clothing and gently used household items for hurricane victims and all of those in need in the greater Lebanon area. As the cooler weather is here, there is a great need for warm weather clothing. The Help Center is now located at: 203 West High Bypass, in Lebanon TN. |
