Two $1,000 Scholarships Awarded by Wilson Democrats

Lebanon, TN: The Wilson County Democratic Party recently awarded two $1,000 scholarships to Secoy Reeves a senior graduating from Lebanon High School and Kalli Nix a senior graduating from Donelson Christian Academy. Secoy is the son of Simmone Reeves of Lebanon and Kalli is the daughter of Matt and Barbara Nix of Mount Juliet.

The scholarships awarded were based upon essays that Secoy and Kalli wrote entitled "The History of Organized Labor Unions in Providing Worker Benefits". They competed against entrants from across the county. Secoy will use his $1,000 scholarship in conjunction with his football scholarship to Carson-Newman College. Kalli will be attending Union University in Jackson, TN and plans to pursue a career in counseling.

This is the fourth year that the Democratic Party has awarded these scholarships to honor the memory of Robert Pruitte who was a native and life-long resident of Wilson County. He was a union leader, community activist and strong supporter of the Democratic Party. He was famous in Democratic Party circles for his creation of many political buttons before his untimely death.

The scholarships were announced at the annual Robert Pruitte Democratic Celebration which raises money each year to fund the scholarships and the activities of the Democratic Party. Secoy Reeves attended with his family, but Kalli Nix was not able to attend. Guest speaker this year was Congressman Lincoln Davis of the 4th Congressional District. Also attending were Representative Stratton Bone, Mike Terry representing Congressman Bart Gordon and Phil Ponder representing Congressman Jim Cooper and representing labor were Jerry Lee President of TN AFL-CIO.
