The Wilson County Democratic Party and the Wilson County Democratic Women recently awarded their yearly scholarships. This year, John Philip Petty of Lebanon won both the scholarships. This is the fifth year that the $1,000 Robert Pruitte Memorial Scholarship has been awarded and the first year of the Dorothy McAdoo Memorial $500 Scholarship awarded by the Democratic Women. (But it is the sixth year that the Democratic Women have awarded a scholarship.)
Both scholarships were essay contests. The Robert Pruitte essay had as its required theme, "The Role of Organized Labor Unions in Providing Worker Benefits." This theme was chosen to honor Pruitte's long career as a leader in the UAW. His memory is honored by the Wilson County Democratic Party for his many contributions to the local and state Democratic Parties and the Wilson County community.
The Pruitte Scholarship was presented at a recent meeting of the Wilson County Democratic Party. They meet on second Monday of the month, for more information, please contact Mary Patterson at 443-0097.
